چکیده

Reformulating the instantons in a complex plane for tunneling or transmitting states, we calculate the pair-production rate of charged fermions in a spatially localized electric field, illustrated by the Sauter electric field E0 sech (z/L), and in a temporally localized electric field such as E0 sech (t/T ). The integration of the quadratic part of WKB instanton actions over the frequency and transverse momentum leads to the pair-production rate obtained by the worldline instanton method, including the prefactor, of Phys. Rev. D 72, 105004 (2005) and 73, 065028 (2006). It is further shown that the WKB instanton action plus the next-to-leading order contribution in spinor QED equals the WKB instanton action in scalar QED, thus justifying why the WKB instanton in scalar QED can work for the pair production of fermions. Finally we obtain the pair-production rate in a spatially localized electric field together with a constant magnetic field in the same direction.

Schwinger Pair Production via Instantons in a Strong Electric Field

In the space-dependent gauge, each mode of the Klein-Gordon equation in a strong electric field takes the form of a time-independent Schrödinger equation with a potential barrier. We propose that the singleand multi-instantons of quantum tunneling may be related with the singleand multi-pair production of bosons and the relative probability for the no-pair production is determined by the total ...

Pair production of light pseudoscalar particles in strong inhomogeneous fields by the Schwinger mechanism

The Schwinger mechanism is a non-perturbative process by which an infinite number of zero frequency photons can produce an electron-positron pair. For example a constant electric field larger than O(1011V/cm) will decay into electron-positron pairs, according to the Schwinger pair production probability formula [1]. In this paper we consider the pseudoscalar-two-photon coupling. We find that th...

QED Effective Actions in Inhomogeneous Backgrounds: Summing the Derivative Expansion

The QED effective action encodes nonlinear interactions due to quantum vacuum polarization effects. While much is known for the special case of electrons in a constant electromagnetic field (the Euler-Heisenberg case), much less is known for inhomogeneous backgrounds. Such backgrounds are more relevant to experimental situations. One way to treat inhomogeneous backgrounds is the ”derivative exp...

We study Schwinger pair creation of charged particles due to the inhomogeneous electric field created by the thin electron layer at the surface of quark stars (the electrosphere). As suggested earlier, due to the low photon emissivity of the quark-gluon plasma and of the electrosphere, electron-positron pair emission could be the main observational signature of quark stars. To obtain the electr...

A Higher Order B-Splines 1-D Finite Element Analysis of Lossy Dispersive Inhomogeneous Planar Layers

In this paper we propose an accurate and fast numerical method to obtain scattering fields from lossy dispersive inhomogeneous planar layers for both TE and TM polarizations. A new method is introduced to analyze lossy Inhomogeneous Planar Layers. In this method by applying spline based Galerkin’s method of moment to scalar wave equation and imposing boundary conditions we obtain reflection and...
